The Old Hairdresser
I am interested in exploring the psychological relationship between people, objects, space, and sound. I centre my practice around storytelling by creating immersive installations for people to experience.
My current project is based around a bar in the centre of Glasgow, The Old Hairdresser’s, which was once known as Broomfield’s Hair and Beauty.
I have created an ambient space that will transport you back through time to the 1980s/90s, focusing on the imagery and conversations that would have echoed in the hairdressing space. The sounds, imagery, and objects will trigger memories for some and transport you back to a place and time. I have tried to bring those sounds and stories from the past into the present.
This project has been inspired by my dad, Christopher Broomfield, who founded Broomfield’s Hair and Beauty. It explores the tales from the old hairdresser himself and features Christopher in conversation, reminiscing about his time there.
This work was featured in the Broomfields Hair and Beauty exhibition at the Old Hairdressers on the 27th of May, where old hairdressers, clients, and the public united, and is now featured in my degree show.
