Master of Fine Art

Glue Factory, 24 students

This two year multidisciplinary programme offers students an extraordinary opportunity to analyse their studio practice in depth, and to modify, develop and secure it accordingly.  The multidisciplinary context also ensures that such developments are protected against narrowly defined ambitions.

MFA students learn from, and contribute to, the delivery of the programme curriculum, the experiences of their peers, and the wider art community based within the city of Glasgow.  Within this situation a premium is placed upon independence, originality, initiative and enterprise.

The artwork "A Pillow" embodies life's duality, drawing inspiration from contrasting experiences of celebration and exposure to ongoing violence through social media and news. It captures the juxtaposition of witnessing New Year's fireworks alongside the stark realities of war in Gaza. The piece features a traditional Palestinian embroidery pattern screen-printed on a white burial shroud, meticulously crafted with hundreds of sewing needles pointing outward, later stitched into a pillow. The transformation of the pillow with sharp metallic pins represents discomfort and pain, subverting its role as a symbol of comfort and rest. It symbolizes mental and physical exhaustion, particularly during restless and sleepless nights. Embedded within the pillow is a speaker playing an audio composition I've created, blending recorded sounds of New Year's fireworks with missiles dropping in Gaza on the same night.
